There is an overwhelming majority of dog owners who prefer to use a lead on their dogs when they walk. However there is much evidence that, especially in the smaller breeds, this practice is not healthy for the dogs skeleton over a period of time. Smaller dogs tend to pull just as hard proportionately as a larger dog but have a much more delicate structure supporting their chest area. This can lead to the dogs having breathing problem in the longer term.
So our suggestion for the smaller or light framed dogs is for the use of a harness that straps around the chest and belly of the dog. The chest strap is designed to take most of the ‘pull’ of the puppy without stressing the neck area where it could cause long term damage. Of course they are available for the larger breeds as well with some having facility for attachments of the dogs food or water.
